How the Elimination of Status Is Already Affecting U.S. Colleges and Universities
Last week, NAFSA and seven other organizations filed a complaint and a motion for preliminary injunction in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts challenging the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) final rule ending the Duration of Status (D/S) framework for international students, exchange visitors, and representatives of foreign media.
Inside Higher Ed reports on the testimony submitted as a part of the complaint, wherein 14 U.S. colleges and universities and the University of California system explained the negative impact the new rule is already having at their institutions, even though the rule doesn't officially take effect until September 15. Part of NAFSA's legal argument is that DHS failed to adequately assess the impact of the new rule before finalizing it.
